Who were the people involved in the Salem Witch Trials? What connection did their religion have?
After traveling to the Americas from England, many Puritans settled in Salem Village. They didn't disagree with the Church of England; they just wanted a more pure way of worshipping and wanted to be on their own. They built their own religious community in Salem, Massachusetts. Puritans look at humans from a rather dark perspective; they think men are generally bad and full of temptation. Their religious beliefs are very strict; they live in a God-fearing manner. Children were expected to follow the stringent rules of the religion as well; they went to church and learned to read by studying the Bible. Many Puritans wrote books or journals, but they were written for personal reasons. They did not write for entertainment but instead wrote of their religion and own self-reflections. Puritanism is a peaceful religion but also very dark and skeptical. The Puritans liked to be isolated; they kept to themselves and focused on God. Because they thought of men to be naturally evil, it was easy to believe that the sickness of the teenage girls in 1692 was caused by other humans. Their beliefs included public persecution in the event that someone was "working for the devil". This is why the accused witches were publically hanged.
